The Jura Distillery, located on the eponymous Scottish island, plays a central role in the development of this wild region. Founded in 1810, it has seen periods of neglect, with buildings falling into disrepair in the early 1900s.
In the 1950s, a group of local residents mobilized to revive this institution. They rebuilt the distillery on the same site, reusing some of the old ruined buildings, and Jura finally reopened in 1963.
The Isle of Jura itself, although similar in size to neighboring Islay, is home to just 200 people.
